Puhoi River Canoe Hire is a successful small family business operating from our home, adjacent to the historic Bohemian landing site on the banks of the Puhoi River.
We, New Zealanders, affectionately refer to ourselves as ‘Kiwis’. We are proud of our Kiwi heritage, our family, and our unique outdoor kiwi lifestyle.
On the 29th June 1863 the first 83 Bohemian pioneers were dropped off at Wenderholm and paddled up this meandering waterway by local Maori.
‘Puhoi’ is a Maori name and translates to ‘slow-water’ which refers to the slow gentle tide that ebbs and flows the 8km to Puhoi Village from the sea.
